Tactics from the first move
The smaller board brings pieces into contact quickly. Checks, captures, forks, pins, promotions, and king safety matter without a long opening phase.
What changes on a 5x6 board
There are five files and six ranks, so pieces meet earlier and king safety becomes urgent. Pawns move one square, there is no castling or en passant, and promotion is to a queen.
Fair starts without opening homework
A seed shuffles the back rank and recreates the same setup later. The position is mirrored for both sides, so neither player gets a different material or piece arrangement advantage.
